Nicholas Conty - Director
Mr. Conty is currently the Director of Bands at Kecoughtan High School. A native of the Hampton Roads area, he attended and graduated from Western Branch High School in Chesapeake, VA. He received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. While at U of M, he was a member of the Michigan Marching Band, University Band, MMB Saxophone Ensemble, and Hockey Pep Band. Mr. Conty was also an active member of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary college band fraternity, and served as Corresponding Secretary his final year of college.
Currently in his 8th year of teaching, Mr. Conty was previously the Assistant Director of Bands at Kecoughtan and Director of the Spratley Gifted Center Band from 2010 to 2013. He is an active private lesson teacher, offering help on saxophone and clarinet. He is a former member of the Tidewater Winds, and currently plays baritone saxophone for the Virginia Wind Symphony. A resident of Hampton, VA, Mr. Conty also is an active recreational runner and amateur woodworker.
Michael Bigelow - Assistant Director
Mr. Bigelow is currently the Assistant Director of Kecoughtan Bands and the Director of Bands at Spratley Gifted Center. He attended and graduated from West Springfield High School in Springfield, VA, where he participated in the wind ensemble and marching band for all four years. He received his Bachelor of Music and Master’s of Art and Teaching in Music Education for Christopher Newport University. While at CNU, he participated in many different ensembles, including the CNU Marching Captains for all four years, Wind Ensemble, University Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band. He performed with the CNU Marching Captains in London for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2011. He was also a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society and Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors.
Mr. Bigelow is currently in his fourth year of teaching at Kecoughtan and Spratley. Starting midway through the 2013-2014 school year, he led Spratley to an Excellent Rating at the State/District VIII Assessment with only two months under his belt. In 2015 and 2016, Spratley received Superior Ratings at Assessment, being the first director in the history of the school to receive Superiors. In 2016, Spratley Gifted Center became a Blue Ribbon School for the first time in its history. Mr. Bigelow has led the Kecoughtan Concert Band to two Excellent Ratings at Assessment in 2015 and 2016. He is also very active with the Kecoughtan High School Marching Warriors.
Mr. Bigelow just got married to his lovely wife Jen and currently resides in Yorktown, VA.
Lisa Farrell - Percussion Instructor
She earned a Bachelor's of Music Degree in Music Education with Applied Percussion from James Madison University in 2003. While attending JMU, she was drum line captain of the Marching Royal Dukes, performing in the 75th Annual Macy's Parade, Inaugural Parades for Governor Mark Warner and President George W. Bush and during New Year’s in Athens, Greece. She graduated as the top undergraduate percussionist in the JMU Wind Ensemble, was a member of the Symphony Orchestra, Pep Band and Opera Theatre Orchestra. She received scholarships for both percussion performance and golf. During her years at JMU, she also earned additional scholarships for the Marching Band and Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society.
She is in her 13th year as a band director. She taught at Kempsville Middle School in Virginia Beach for 8 years and is currently in her 4th year at Thomas Eaton Middle School in Hampton. Her Concert Bands have always earned Superior Ratings at the yearly Assessments. She was nominated for Teacher of the Year in Virginia Beach and in Hampton, Tagged by the Virginia Beach Superintendent, chosen for Who's Who of American Teachers, 2005 Hampton All-City Guest Conductor and nominated for the Yale Distinguished Music Educators Award. She was on the Curriculum Writing Committee for Virginia Beach Music and served on the Principal’s Advisory Committee for 8 years. She is a member of the Percussion Arts Society, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, Golden Key International Honour Society. She currently performs as a percussionist with the Virginia Wind Symphony, the Williamsburg Symphonia and other local groups. She has performed at the American Bandmasters Association Conference, Virginia Music Educator’s Conference and the Midwest Music Clinic in 2004 and 2012. She taught the Grafton HS Drum Line and front Ensemble in 2012, Kecoughtan Drum Line in 2003 and 2004 and is currently on the Kecoughtan High School Band staff as the percussion instructor.
Steven Thompson - Marching Instructor
Steven Thompson is in his 8th year as a music instructor. He has taught elementary music and middle school band in Hampton and York County, VA since 2007. He has been a music arranger, drill designer, and marching clinician for various high school bands in the Hampton Roads area. He is an active performer (trombone) with the Virginia Wind Symphony, and Thomas Nelson Community College music department, and has also performed professionally with Theater IV and Barksdale Theater in Richmond, VA. Mr. Thompson is an alumnus of Woodside High School (2001) and a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (2006) with a bachelor’s degree in instrumental music education. He has extensive marching experience with DCI. He marched two years with Carolina Crown (2000 and 2002), two years with The Cadets (2003-2004), and served as the baritone technician for The Cadets (2007).
